The Staff

The Staff

Here's one interpretation.

The staff symbolizes authority. With the staff, one is able to walk what Buddhism sometimes calls the middle way, with balance and harmony. It can help moderate extremes. The staff can help you choose the best action. The staff reminds you that your power should come from a genuine desire to help others.

For example, The wizard Gandalf used his staff to help the forces of light triumph over darkness, in the novel The Lord of the Rings. In the bible, Moses used a staff that could transform into a snake, to summon natural forces to help his people during their desert journey. This transforming staff reminds us of the ever changing impermanent nature of all things.

When this card appears, here are a few actions you might consider.

The Staff call you to transition between opposites, consider options, and make intuitive decisions, to choose the right path. Take the first step on a trip that your heart has already begun by trusting your inner knowledge. Find a harmony between the energies of will and surrender. Use the Staff's power to unify that which seems divided.

If this card appears upside down or reversed, and you choose to include its position as part of your reading, here's what it could mean.

You may feel stuck between masculine and feminine energies. You may feel torn between action and inaction. Consider all your options and find a balance. Remember that there is balance to everything. There cannot be a day without night. There cannot be darkness without light. There cannot be wrong without right.

Meditate on this. Observe your thoughts. Direct them to focus on what is truly needed for the situation. Make a decision. Then let fate unfold as it will.
